TO SWITCH ON:
Turn GAIN ON/OFF knob fully clockwise. If the locator starts bleeping, turn knob back again until the bleep just stops. Faster bleeps and higher meter reading occur as you approach energized. No bleeps with the knob turned fully clockwise indicate that there is probably no live cable in the area swept by the Unit. But make sure to-TEST BATTERY.
TO FIND POSITION OF CABLE:
Search until meter indication and bleeps reach maximum. As indicator reaches 10, turn Gain Control back until bleeping nearly stops. Move ELCOMETER as necessary until the higher reading is obtained. Mark the spot on the direction of the cable by turning 90 deg to left and right. Highest reading will indicate cable direction and will follow line of detector handle.
TO DETERMINE DEPTH:
Hold ELCOMETER over the mark made (as above). Turn Gain control until indicator registers exactly 10, and then move Unit left or right of direction of cable until the indicator ceases to fall towards zero. Mark this point. The distance between the two marks is approximately equal to the depth below the ground level.
TEST BATTERY:
Switch on Unit but do not turn up Gain Control. Press Battery Test Button. The indicator should read between 7 and 10. If the reading is below 7, renew battery (fit a new PP3/9V rectangular battery). Test again; if reading is still below 7 contact supplier.
IN HEAVY TRAFFIC:
Use Meter indication of signal rather than beeper, unless it is safe to wear headphones. Headphones plug into the side of the Control Box.
AFTER USE:
Ensure Unit is switched OFF. Remove battery if Unit is to be stored for more than one week.
WARNING:
THE ELCOMETER IS ONLY AN INDICATION OF A CABLE CARRYING CURRENT. IT IS UNABLE TO DETECT A SHIELDED CABLE OR ONE THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE SUPPLY BUT NO CURRENT FLOWING IN IT. THEREFORE ALWAYS PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
